"The pilots were very satisfied! They appreciated getting one-on-one training with a dedicated coach."

Issue

Enable nearly 300 pilots with complex schedules to take training tailored to their jobs, in order to improve their fluency during announcements in English.

Mission

We created a customized training program with Air France management, for which 30 dedicated English teachers were trained. We accompanied 287 pilots over a period of 3 months, offering them the flexibility and ease of use that their job requires.

Interview with :

Caroline Faurie
Air France Customer Experience Manager
How did we define Air France's training needs?

Air France-KLM has more than 3,500 pilots and has a dedicated training department within the group.

Air France's main challenge is for our pilots to communicate more and better during flights through the various announcements on both routine and impromptu information.

Which professions were concerned by this need for training, and which skills were sought?‍

The aim was to train Air France instructors, captains and airline pilot officers on a voluntary basis, with a specific focus on pilots with level 4 or 5 English (level 6 being considered as the mastery of the language by a native speaker). The objective was to make their announcements more fluid and personalized. The idea was to be able to adapt the messages according to the language skills of each pilot and to follow his wishes.

How did the training take shape?

For each pilot, an initial discussion allowed us to assess their linguistic level and specific expectations, and then, depending on availability, the practical sessions were set up. The objective was to find for each person his or her own way of approaching the announcements, then to practice and converse in order to become more fluent.our airline pilots have schedules that can sometimes change without notice. Our pilots have schedules that can sometimes change without notice. The training courses had to be offered on weekdays and weekends, and be adapted to the different time zones of the Air France network for those wishing to take courses during their stopovers. This reactivity and adaptability were very much appreciated.

How does the training respond to the daily professional life of your employees?

We did not want a classic language training but a module adapted to the pilots' mission (introducing oneself, presenting one's technical and commercial crew, speaking up during so-called contingency situations - medical diversion, turbulence, etc.).

Did the training lead to other training needs?

In the end, the module was a real success, so much so that it is also proposed in our training offer for cabin crew and still available to pilots as part of their CPF.

Lessons learned from this mission, on the Lingueo side

Through this collaboration with Air France, we learned how to co-construct a customized training program for a very specialized target. We have also seen the effectiveness of a curriculum that aims to disinhibit through humor.
